HIMOINSA Racing Team sets off towards Greece

  • Without barely any rest after Merzouga Rally, the HIMOINSA Team shifts from the desert’s dunes to the intricate mountains of the Hellas Rally, which will take place in Greece from May 21st to 28th.
  • Rosa Romero starts her Raid season and on this occasion will join Iván Cervantes, Dani Oliveras and Gerard Farrés, who is a repeat participant in this interesting event after his victory last year.

Second round of the season for the HIMOINSA Team. Barely a few days after taking part in the Merzouga Rally, the red squad sets its sights on Classic Greece to tackle the Hellas Rally. After Gerard Farrés’ great performance last year, the red squad rises its bet and lines up with four of its riders.

Rosa Romero, Iván Cervantes, Dani Oliveras and Farrés himself will represent the Team aboard their usual KTMs. For this occasion the team will use two 450 EXC (lighter and better suited to this type of terrain) for Rosa and Gerard, and two 450 Rally for Dani and Iván with the mission of continuing to improve on technical aspects towards Dakar.

The race will consist of a prologue and 6 stages, and will set off from the city of Nafpaktos to roam a total of 1700km of tracks. The race days’ format is different to the rest of the calendar, given that there will be two specials every day. The characteristics of this race are the tight, intricate routes and some complicated navigation due to the countless crossings and the little time riders will have to rest between Roadbook indications. A true test of mental toughness, with very varied terrain and, as it has been announced, a possibility of snow during the 6th stage.

A new challenge which the Murcian team tackles with high ambitions and the goal of resuming their preparation towards Dakar 2018.

Miguel Puertas, Team Manager (@MIGUELPUERTAS58): “We are persistent on our goal of racking up the maximum number of kilometres leading up to Dakar 2018, it is the key to keeping improving this season. This May the team is making a great effort and after Merzouga we wanted to come back to Hellas. Gerard won there last year and told us that it is a very interesting race from the navigation point of view, very complex due to the type of terrain. Precisely, it is an aspect which we want to reinforce, and that is why this year we are lining up with Gerard, Dani, Iván and Rosa, who is starting her season in Greece. These have been two very intense months and we are sure that Hellas will provide a lot of information to continue working.”

Antonio Gimeno and HIMOINSA Racing Team part ways

  • The charismatic rider, a key figure to the team’s recent success, is tackling new professional challenges which force him to hang up his boots for this season.

Professional, discreet, fast, resourceful… these are just a few of the adjectives with which some of his teammates describe Antonio Gimeno. A key rider for the HIMOINSA Racing Team who announces today that he is provisionally retiring from competition with the objective of focusing 100% on new professional projects which will require his full dedication.

Antonio has been present in the team since the origins of the HIMOINSA adventures in Dakar. Since the introduction of the structure to Dakar 2015, when he competed alongside Miguel Puertas and Rosa Romero, he has set the team’s guidelines while being witness, and to a large degree participant in the team’s evolution into what it is nowadays.

The rider from Madrid has not given up racing year after year, with unbeatable reliability as he has proven with his streak of finish lines reached in the Dakars he has raced: four out of four. Never crashes, persistent and and a great navigator, Antonio has been the perfect support for the structure, and his work and effort have been essential in the achieving of Gerard Farrés’ third place in the latest edition.

His upcoming future requires his full dedication in a new business adventure, which has forced him to give up racing temporally to put all his effort into this new professional path.

The whole team pays tribute to this great rider and wishes him nothing but success in this new stage which is starting, grateful for his dedication, proffesionalism and virtue along these last years in the HIMOINSA Team.

Antonio Gimeno (@antoniogimeno_):“These have been some incredible years within the team. I have always felt very comfortable and at home, the HIMOINSA family has always supported me so much and we have enjoyed every race we have taken part of. It has been a beautiful experience to push this project from the beginning, and having arrived to where we are currently in Dakar. Now it’s time to take a break to focus on new projects and challenges for which I am eager and which require my full dedication. Motorcycles are my life, and I will not stop enjoying them, and who knows, maybe in the future I will consider returning to competition. I thank Miguel, my teammates, the mechanics and all the staff who are always behind the scenes for how they have treated me, we are a big family and that shows. And of course, thank you to the fans who have pushed me in every race and through social networks, I have felt very loved.”

HIMOINSA Team_Gerard Farrés_1

HIMOINSA Team, second in the sand labyrinth of Merzouga Rally

  • Gerard Farrés, after achieving a stage victory, keeps his successful streak going as he finishes the rally in second position after a hard fight with  Xavier De Soultrait.
  • With all the HIMOINSA Team riders across the finish line, Iván Cervantes finished in an excellent 8th position and Dani Oliveras was 13th after the hell of Erfoud.

Spectacular is the word that best defines Merzouga Rally´s last stage: the “Grand Prix des dunes” is a show in the form of a crazy circuit through sand dunes, topped off with a mass start which gave goosebumps to every spectator in attendance. To arrive there, six intense stages in which the HIMOINSA Team has shined once again with Gerard Farrés, Iván Cervantes and Dani Oliveras fighting every day against the sand labyrinth which was prepared for this round of the Dakar Series.

The race started six days ago, with a very busy first day: prologue, practice and first stage all in the same day. With a conservative mindset, the three riders placed themselves within the top ten overall, an unbeatable start to the rally which held up on day two, with Farrés strongly positioned in second place overall.

The strategy changed on the third stage, where Gerard made an attack and got his first stage win, cementing his second position in the overall standings, four minutes behind french De Soultrait. A great day as well for Oliveras, who crossed the finish line in fifth position. The day finished with an impressive sandstorm which hampered the assistance’s bike maintenance jobs.

The following day, the riders would tackle the Rally’s main course: the marathon stage, which would prove crucial towards the unfolding of the race. Two days separated by a remote bivouac with no assistance in the middle of the desert. Undoubtedly, the strategy was to avoid any mistakes and to take care of the bikes mechanically to get through the almost 500km unharmed. Uneven luck for the HIMOINSA Team riders, with Gerard Farrés suffering from gearbox issues and Dani Oliveras who ended up paying up a handful of minutes due to a costly navigation mistake. Once more, meteorological conditions were nothing short of extreme, and the wind in the desert provided for a rough night in all the rider’s tents in the improvised bivouac.

The final day, a true party, gave no opportunities to improve on their respective positions in the barely 50km of itinerary. A Rally very much to the liking of the HIMOINSA Team riders, with varied stages, complicated navigation, and of course, the ruthless sand dunes which have made their appearance every day of the race. A great performance by the team, with all its riders across the finish line and a great job done in the season kickoff.

Gerard Farrés (@gerardfarres): “The win has escaped us one more year, but I am very happy with the work we have done. Finishing second in a race this tough is great news, and it keeps us near the top after Dakar’s third place. Strategy was very important, keeping rivals under control at all times and studying our options day by day. We decided to attack in the third stage and ended up getting the stage win. The marathon stage was the key to this edition, and we were fighting very hard with De Soultrait and Caimi, but an issue with the gearbox made me lose a few precious minutes which I was unable to make up in the final day. I am very happy with the whole team’s effort and I think we are on the right track towards this oncoming season.”

Iván Cervantes (@IvanCervantes25): “It has been a fantastic race. We have worked hard on the sand and I am especially happy with my navigation. It is true that I have made some mistakes which have cost me some minutes and that has dragged me down in the standings, but we have surely made another step forward, I felt very comfortable with the navigation and the results got better day by day, finishing in eight place overall. We have been able to test a lot of settings on the bikes and the team has worked like clockwork. I am content wit the last day’s third place, fighting hand in hand with all the riders, it was really fun!”

Dani Oliveras (@danioliveras_21): “The previous weeks of training we had before starting Merzouga were one of the keys to achieving this result as a team. We had good speed on the bike and that has showed from the first stage. There were lots of navigation traps which we have gotten through well but which have been very demanding and have forced us to keep our focus. The third stage went perfect and without mistakes in the navigation, which took me to a fifth place stage finish, which gave me a lot of confidence. On the negative side, a mistake in a Way Point on stage 4 cost me almost 50 minutes and proved that you must stay focused at all costs during a race like this. The KTM has worked flawlessly and we have very good sensations, we have done a good job.”

Round one to HIMOINSA Racing Team: Merzouga Rally

  • The HIMOINSA Racing Team is back on track for the prestigious 2017 Merzouga Rally after its historical podium in Dakar.
  • Gerard Farrés, Iván Cervantes and Dani Oliveras will represent the team in the season’s first event.
  • The race will develop from May the 7th to the 12th with 6 stages characterised by sand and navigation.

Returning to the desert is always great news for the HIMOINSA Team. This weekend, the red KTMs of the Murcian team will roar again in the prestigious Merzouga Rally which will take place in Morocco from the 7th to the 12th of May. This legendary race marks the start of the 2017 season for the team after Gerard Farrés’ podium finish in the past Dakar. A third place which still tastes like glory and gives the team wings to battle for the win in Merzouga.

The action will start on Sunday the 7th with a very complete day in which riders will get their day rolling with the classic “free practice” offered by the organiser, followed by the prologue and the first stage of competition. A good appetizer for what they will face during the next five days throughout more than 1200km of racing. As usual, sand and navigation will be the keys of this race located around Erfoud, which will include a Marathon stage and a bivouac in the middle of the desert. To cap it all off, the classic “Grand Prix des dunes” where the riders will tackle the last stage riding simultaneously through a complicated sand itinerary.

For this occassion, the HIMOINSA Team will line up with three of their riders in this race: Gerard Farrés, Iván cervantes and Dani Oliveras will represent the “Red Army” which will battle against 85 riders for the glory in Merzouga. After an intense training programme during the past few weeks in Morocco, the team is highly motivated to face this first challenge of the year.

Gerard Farrés (@gerardfarres): “We are back racing! After a brief break since Dakar finished, the whole team got back to work immediately to keep improving on the weaknesses we detected. The past few weeks we have been in Morocco training and testing new equipment for the bikes, and we have really enjoyed ourselves. Now it’s time to focus back on racing and giving it our best effort, although we are aware that there is a very high level in this race, and of  the toughness that the six days will entail. Last year I finished fourth after an incredibly tough rally. I remember crossing the finish line with an injured hand and very exhausted physically, so we will not hold back to try to improve on our result.”

Iván Cervantes (@IvanCervantes25): “This will be my first Merzouga Rally and I am impatient to get things started. This year I will focus 100% on rallyes, and kicking off the season so early gives me a lot of time to improve. After the kilometres of training we have been racking up these past months, starting with such a similar race to Dakar I think is key to a good preparation. The team is getting really involved and at this stage in the year we have already rode lots of kilometres in the sand, testing the bikes and working extremely hard on navigation. I hope to ride a good race and above all, enjoy this new challenge.”

Dani Oliveras (@danioliveras_21): “This is my second Merzouga rally after our participation in 2015. I feel really comfortable with the dunes and the navigation, so I am very motivated. I was really pleased with how I finished Dakar, and I start this season with a lot of energy and looking forward to improving and bringing success to the HIMOINSA Racing Team. We have planned a very complete season with several training sessions and especially lots of racing, so I think there couldn’t be a better start than this competition in the desert.”

Presented as a stepping stone towards Dakar for new participants, Merzouga rally is really a master in dune riding and navigation in the unforgiving moroccan desert, which will surely live up to the expectations.

HIMOINSA Team 1

Presenting 2018 Dakar: HIMOINSA Racing Team starts its engines

The HIMOINSA Racing Team was present in the launch of Rally Dakar’s 40th edition, which took place in Barcelona.

“Dakar’s Red Army” confirms its presence on the starting line of such a special edition with more ambition than ever after Gerard Farrés’ third place finish in 2017.

Marc Coma has revealed the details of a race whose itinerary will live up to the expectations.

The 40th Edition of Dakar was presented today in Barcelona city. This annual meeting, framed within the “Dakar World Tour” by the organization, serves as a meeting point for all the Spanish competitors year after year. Despite having been brought forward a few weeks from the usual dates, still present was 2017’s third place finisher Gerard Farrés, joined by his teammates Iván Cervantes, Dani Oliveras, Rosa Romero and his team leader, Miguel Puertas. Absent due to personal reasons were Antonio Gimeno and Antonio Ramos, making up the rest of the team.

A few days ago the full itinerary of the next South American event was released, with Perú’s comeback and Paraguay’s exit as the main novelties. As of today, it was Marc Coma who emphasized on these details for the new edition of the race: 3 countries (Perú, Bolivia and Argentina), 3 legendary cities (Lima will host the start, La Paz the rest day and Córdoba the finish line), 14 days of competition, 1  marathon stage and 3 loop stages; the basic ingredients for a race which celebrates its birthday in better shape than ever.

As for the stages, five of them will run through Peruvian territory (the start will take place in Lima), four in Bolivia (with the rest day in its capital, La Paz) and five in Argentina, with the finish line in Córdoba.

The HIMOINSA Racing Team will be lined up at the start of this new edition on January the 6th, keeping up its ambitions of battling against the great official structures. After 40 years of adventures and challenges in Dakar, the HIMOINSA Team is already part of its history.

Gerard Farrés: “This meeting in Barcelona is always magical for me: the race companions, the new itinerary… it marks the real starting point towards next year. Marc has told us the details and it is a pity to leave Paraguay, its people are amazing and we all have great memories of that country. On the other hand, going back to Perú is great news. Also those first stages with so much sand will be good for us, it will be a demanding route from the start and I really like that. This year we are working really hard and will do many races to arrive to Lima in the best shape. It will be a spectacular year!”

Miguel Puertas: “We have been working since we got back from Dakar and we have set up a very complete season, training from the very first day. We are completing a calendar of races which will start at the coming Merzouga Rally, and which also contemplates training sessions and races in Morocco and some events in South America. We try to get better every year and that translates into the team’s great results. Gerard’s podium was historical and we are ambitious for next year. Iván Cervantes will spend the whole year working 100% focused on Rally, and that is great news for the whole team. The rest of the riders and team personnel are also plethoric and eager to attack this new season.”

· The team will be back on track for the prestigious Merzouga Rally after its historical achievement in Dakar 2017.

· The red squad will be represented in this edition by three of its riders: Gerard Farrés, Iván Cervantes and Dani Oliveras.

· The event, part of the Dakar Series, will take place from the 7th to the 12th of May in Morocco.

Barely one month after finishing Rally Dakar 2017 with the historical third place finish achieved by Gerard Farrés, the HIMOINSA Racing Team starts to unveil its racing program in Rally Raid for this coming 2017 season. After a few days of well deserved rest, the team gets back to its usual activity with its sights already set on Dakar 2018 and the objective of continuing to improve on its excellent results in the South American race.

The season promises to be packed with activity and Dakar’s “Red Army” has confirmed its assistance to the 2017 Merzouga Rally. This event has transformed into one of the most important races of the year and a great opportunity to work on new solutions towards Dakar 2018 from the start of the season. The big presence of sand, its demanding navigation and a Dakar style format from being part of the Dakar Series will allow the HIMOINSA Team to kick off their Raid activity in the best possible conditions.

For this edition the Murcian team increases its presence from last year going from one rider to three in the race, this time listing up Iván Cervantes, Dani Oliveras and Gerard Farrés, who will attempt to improve on his excellent 4th place finish from 2016. Very motivated by their success in Dakar, the team is incredibly excited to get back to competition and with their aspirations set on fighting for the top step of the podium.

In the technical department, the red squad will line up with three of its KTM 450 Rally with the objective of trying new improvements in a very Dakar resembling itinerary.

The race will take place from the 7th to the 12th of May in 2017 in the surroundings of Erfoud, and will consist of six stages and a mainly off-piste itinerary, a marathon stage, and tons of sand which will be enjoyed by the whole HIMOINSA Team in their return to the desert.

The CSD celebrates Gerard Farrés’ podium in Dakar 2017

  • The Sports General Director, Jaime González Castaño, hosted the HIMOINSA Racing Team rider along with the team director, Miguel Puertas

The National Sports Council (CSD) hosted Gerard Farrés for a visit this morning, the Spanish rider from the HIMOINSA Racing Team has achieved a third place finish in the toughest race in the world: Dakar.

Jaime González Castaño, Sports General Director, was in charge of welcoming the Manlleu native and took advantage of the occasion to congratulate the rider and to emphasize on this great moment in Spanish motorcycling: “Our compromise is that we are all part of a team and thus the Spanish athletes’ success is assumed as our own success. Spain is a worldwide powerhouse in motorcycling. In every discipline we have World Champions who have who have taken the reins from previous generations. You are our best ambassadors”, he commented.

Gerard Farrés, on his behalf, thanked his main sponsor, HIMOINSA, for the oportunity they gave him to achieve this podium and commented about the great toughness of the event: “It has been one of the toughest Dakars in the last 10 years especially due to the challenging navigation. Keeping calm and making the right decisions was paramount. The cancellation of two stages which suited our strong points was detrimental for us, but that’s how Dakar works”, he explained.

The HIMOINSA Racing Team director, Miguel Puertas, also had some words of gratitude towards the CSD: “We have always wanted to portray that a 100% Spanish team with such limitations can perform at the highest level with hope, hard work, effort and team spirit, and we were able to convey these values in sport through such a tough race as Dakar. Values that are also conveyed here at the CSD”.
