 HIMOINSA RACING TEAM

The Dakar Rally is the toughest race in the world. The renowned raid is a test which only the best can overcome. Experience, resilience, power and technique are essential to face such a demanding challenge in South American soil.

The HIMOINSA Racing Team Dakar adventure started a decade ago with the sponsorship of Miguel Puertas. After nine appearances with excellent performances, in 2015 he faces the race from a new perspective and in 2016 he will lead the five riders with the aim of fighting for the victory in the next edition of the toughest race in the world, with a fully Spanish team.

The HIMOINSA Racing Team will take part in the 2016 Dakar Rally, leaping forward and placing itself as a leading structure in the world’s toughest race. Our philosophy: to prove that energy makes us go beyond our limits to achieve any goal we set. Our goal: to make history.

TEAM is what best defines the HIMOINSA Racing Team. Five riders, five stories, all driven by excitement. The HIMOINSA Racing Team is growing and represents a powerful and balanced structure capable of aiming towards the top in the 38th edition of the Dakar Rally. Five perfectly combined fighting mindsets will confront the most extreme challenge in motorsports. Iván Cervantes (@IvanCervantes25), Gerard Farrés (@gerardfarres), Antonio Gimeno (@antoniogimeno_), Rosa Romero (@RosaRomeroFont) y Dani Oliveras (@danioliveras_21), these are our riders, united by a special chemistry. Beside them, assistance, mechanics, sponsors and human personnel, complete the HIMOINSA Racing Team.

Behind our steering wheel, Miguel Puertas. In his 12th Dakar, he gives up the control of his bike for the control of this incredible team.

As for the technical part, the HIMOINSA Racing Team trusts in KTM once more, presenting two cutting edge models: three KTM 450 Rally 2016 for Cervantes, Farrés and Gimeno, and two KTM 450 EXC 2016 Rally Kit for Romero and Oliveras. The equipment will be represented by a 6×6 truck, 2 support vehicles and 12 people in the team.

The team is completed

  • The HIMOINSA Team was full of activity today: it was time to pick up the vehicles that will take part in the race.

The Riders were nervous, as if they were missing something… It was a subtle feeling, but today, its cause was discovered: the bikes were missing. After so many kilometers of training, these few ride-less days have not gone unnoticed.

The vehicles arrived weeks ago, on a ship coming from Le Havre, where they  set off in late November. Riders and mechanics congregated  at the Euroamerican Terminal to collect the motorbikes, the 6×6 truck and the Bürstner motorhomes which will assist the HIMOINSA Racing Team.

IMG_20151229_094713 (Copiar)

Early in the day, several teams already gathered at the terminal, so the wait was long. Gradually, a trickle of trucks, cars, motorcycles and quads came out through the main entrance. Even part of the organization´s cars were picked up today, all this resulting in an impressive parade.

IMG_20151229_100437 (Copiar)

The procedure is simple: a team member presents the vehicle documents and credentials for its removal. After verifying the documents, access is granted to the parking lot (cars and trucks) or the warehouse (bikes and quads) where all the quality seals prepared upon delivery in France are checked. After this verification, the mechanical condition is reviewed and the vehicles driven to the door of the complex, where an ASO commissioner takes note of its departure. An operation lasting a total of  3 hours.

IMG_8339 (Copiar)

Finally, the 5 bikes and support vehicles pass through the main gate and head to Technopolis, where the organization centralizes the whole Dakar operation in Buenos Aires. A fair traffic jam, a quick stop to eat, a pit stop and 60km later, the team arrived at the first camp of  2016 Dakar. The next few hours were also intense, as the impressive amount of material being transported had to be organized: parts, tents, motorhome preparation, kits … all taken out to be returned to its final orderly position for the race.
IMG_20151229_155732 (Copiar)
A busy, but very satisfying day: the racing atmosphere is already flooding the camp!

The longest liaison

  • The Dakar already has begun for the HIMOINSA Racing Team after setting foot on Argentinean soil.

It took them 10.000km and 12 hours of flight time. Barely a sigh compared to the 14 days that will be necessary for the riders of the HIMOINSA Racing Team to complete almost the same distance, crossing Argentina and Bolivia in this shortly upcoming Dakar. Except travelling in a plane does not entail sand, treacherous tracks, or any such adventures…

IMG_20151227_232537_1

The meeting of the whole team was the most emotive moment of the trip: 5 riders, 4 mechanics, 1 driver and the Team Manager embraced in greetings minutes before departing towards Buenos Aires. They are prepared and know that the adventure has only begun. Awaiting them, three weeks of partnership and struggle towards achieving the completion of Dakar 2016.

During the trip, a look over the Regulations, a brief exchange of impressions on this race that is on the verge of beginning, and, especially, some much deserved rest. Knowing what is waiting for them, every hour of sleep counts. Miguel Puertas, tirelessly gives the final touches to the race documentation, while the riders sleep above the Atlantic Ocean.

IMG_20151228_115433

At the arrival, the striking blow of heat of the Argentine winter served as a warning for what  was to come. Baggage claim, shuttle ride and arrival to the hotel in the Buenos Aires city center. After a typical Argentinean roast to celebrate the beginning of the adventure, a light training session to adapt and the first Team coordination meeting.

IMG_20151228_173034

The first “stage” has been successfully completed. Let the show begin!

HIMOINSA Racing Team: 2016 DAKAR Dictionary

  • The HIMOINSA Racing Team presents the definitive dictionary about the Dakar – with its help you won’t miss anything!

A.S.O.: Amaury Sport Organisation, the french company organising the Dakar Rally.

Assistance: Trucks, mechanics, Team Managers… all the support staff that wait for the riders in each bivouac in order to repair their vehicles, preparing them for the next day’s stage.

Bivouac: Daily camp where the riders and asistance arrive after each stage. It is a travelling village counting more than 3,000 people and having all the necessary services: food, toilets, a space to work on the vehicles, medical centre, the race office, etc. There are two alternating bivouacs.

Briefing: It is a daily meeting during which the organisation explains the details of the next stage. It takes place at 8 p.m.

CAP: a compass bearing indicated in the roadbook which the riders have to follow until the next reference.

Cervantes, Iván: HIMOINSA Racing Team rider (#52), @IvanCervantes25.

DZ/FZ: Beginning/End of the Speed Control Zone. In given points, the speed of the riders is controlled for safety reasons.

Special Stage (SS): Timed section of each day tour. The time used by every rider determines their classification.

Erg: desert covered with dunes.

Farrés, Gerard: HIMOINSA Racing Team rider (#23), @gerardfarres.

Fesh Fesh: Very fine sand (like talc) which devours vehicles and makes it difficult to see the track, hiding traps.

Gimeno, Antonio: HIMOINSA Racing Team rider (#92), @antoniogimeno_.

GPS: It only offers the compass information although it can be unblocked (in this case a penalty is applied) in order to offer additional information that can serve as a guide when the competitor is lost. It is also used to control the competitors’ speed during a given stage.

HIMOINSA Racing Team: Biggest Spanish team in 2016 Dakar.

Iritrack: It is a satellite tracking system which all the competitors have installed. It makes the organisation know their precise location at each moment of the rally raid. Besides, it makes posible for the rider and the race control to communicate.

KTM: 450 Rally (3) y 450 EXC Kit (2), 5 motorcycles of the HIMOINSA Racing Team.

Liaison: a transfer section from the bivouac to the SS start point and from the SS end point to the next bivouac.

Marathon Stage: a two-day stage of competition during which the asistance is not authorised to work on the motorbikes. The riders themselves have to repair them in order to compete for the next day’s classification.

Medical helicopter: If a rider activates the red Iritrack button the organisation immediately sends a rescue helicopter.

Mousse: It’s a gum “doughnut” which is installed inside the wheel. It allows for rolling without air and avoiding punctures.

Neutral Zone: It is an untimed section between two special stages. It may also refer to the fact of stopping the race by the organization in case of an incidence.

Oliveras, Dani: HIMOINSA Racing Team rider (#62), @danioliveras_21.

Parc Fermé (Closed Park): It is a place where the motorbikes park and where it is totally forbidden to work on them. The riders will have to apply these rules during the marathon Jujuy-Jujuy stage.

PCO: A post of operational coordination of the race. It works 24 hours a day and follows the development of each stage.

Penalty: The time added to the rider’s SS times in case of not having complied with some point of the race regulations. It may also be a financial sanction, like in case of exceeding the maximum speed limits in some tour zones.

Puertas, Miguel: The Team Manager of the HIMOINSA Racing Team, @MIGUELPUERTAS58.

Rest day: Halfway through the race, between stages 7 and 8, the whole caravan stops in Salta. The organisation gives the riders and their vehicles one day of rest before they face the second week of the rally.

Road Book: It is a roll of paper that contains the indications for the given day’s stage, including the direction indications, way to follow, dangers and distances of the tour. The competitor can follow the road book with help of their navigation devices.

Romero, Rosa: HIMOINSA Racing Team rider (#93), @RosaRomeroFont.

Sentinel: a device which informs the riders, by means of a whistle, of a proximity of another vehicle. It is very useful in case of overtaking in poor visibility conditions and it especially helps to avoid bike accidents.

Trip-Master: Navigation tool that indicates the exact distance from the place in which it is zeroed. In this way, the exact kilometers between two road book points of refrence are measured.

Uyuni: a famous and spectacular salt pan located in Bolivia. Three stages will take place in its vicinity (stages 5, 6 and 7).

Way Point: obligatory point to pass by all the competitors. If a competitor gets lost and does not pass through this control, they are penalised by the organization. Some way points are signposted and others not, to make sure the riders follow the established route without shortcuts.

Yanmar & HIMOINSA: Principal sponsors of the HIMOINSA Racing Team.

HIMOINSA Racing Team 2

HIMOINSA Racing Team: the high altitude challenge .

  • HIMOINSA Racing Team is finishing their preparation for the Dakar 2016 with a special training focused on high altitude adaptation.

Thousands of kilometres of training, hours and hours of gym exercises, preparation races, navigation sessions… what else is necessary to face the Dakar? The HIMOINSA Racing Team is finishing their preparation, focusing on one of the most feared enemies of the upcoming edition: the high altitude.

With 3 stages in Bolivia at more than 4,000 metres above sea level, the altitude has become a vital issue as far as preparing the race strategy is concerned. The Dakar has always required complex physical and mental training in order to face long days of driving, extreme temperatures and continued physical efforts. But now, the driver’s performance in difficult conditions related to high altitude and lack of oxygen must be thoroughly prepared.

The everyday situation for the local population used to high altitudes is becoming an additional problem for the Dakar caravan. But how can one prepare for this new challenge? There are various possibilities:

One way to get used to this kind of conditions is to exercise the body at high altitudes for long periods of time. The best you can do is to go to high mountain zones and put into practice a specific training program, gaining and losing the altitude in order to make the body adapt. The mountaineers and alpinists are used to these routines which make them avoid the feared “altitude sickness”.

Another way to adapt the body to work at high altitude is to do a training program in a High Performance Centre where the conditions of lack of oxygen are simulated and the sportsman’s evolution clinically supervised. The specialists Martí Noguera and Francisco Espinar advise riders on this specific training.

In this case, the work plan is divided into two protocols, each with a different objective:

The first one consists in the rider´s introduction to a hypobaric chamber where the air composition and pressure is adjusted, simulating the required altitude conditions. Inside, the driver does physical exercises (bicycle, treadmill) and the partial pressure of oxygen in his tissues is supervised in order to obtain a precise record of his performance. In this protocol it is possible to reduce the oxygen in his tissues by as much as 80%. Its aim is to make the driver used to dealing with the sensation of lack of air and high pulse rate – conditions he will find in Bolivia.

The second protocol is focused on the driver’s adaptation to high altitudes so that his body can generate more red blood cells and better tolerate these high stages. In this case, the “intermittent hypoxic training” is applied – the driver remains stationary while breathing hypoxic air via a mask. The amount of oxygen is changing continuously, simulating the altitude changes of the body.

These two protocols are jointly used during three weeks in order to achieve a good adaptation of the riders’ bodies and a better physical performance in the highest stages of the race.

With this training program, combined with emergency mechanics practices, the HIMOINSA Racing Team is finishing their preparations for the Dakar. The challenge begins in a few days!
